About me

I am originally from Fermanagh – a lovely place in the West of Ireland. I have lived in North Yorkshire for a long time, enjoying the coast and rural environment.  My early influences and interest in working in watercolour were encouraged greatly by the famous Irish artist Kathleen Bridle, who was an inspirational teacher. I trained at Belfast College Of Art and taught in specialist art and design education for many years, eventually becoming Head of The Scarborough School of Art. I continued in college education, as Her Majesty’s Inspector with special interest for visual arts.

Since retiring from education I enjoy painting locally in Yorkshire and in Valencia. I like to paint seascape, landscapes and people.  I usually work in watercolour, working directly outside whenever possible. In Spain I have enjoyed painting the sea, the plants by the sea edge and hidden gardens. The sea is very difficult to capture, the freshness of approach is a great challenge and rewarding when it works. I tend to work directly in colour without preliminary drawing.

My work is mainly in private collections – I also have shown work in small gallery exhibitions. My first solo exhibition of watercolours was held successfully at the Granary Space at The Wolds Gallery, Staxton, North Yorkshire, in May 2014.

In July 2016, I was delighted to exhibit at the Triton Gallery at Sledmere House, East Yorkshire, with two other artists.

I have had my paintings of sea and garden flora and the sea printed in silk, the scarves are very beautiful and were very popular during the show.

Please contact me directly if you would like to see my paintings or scarves.
